Comparison of Health Status in the Elderly according to Living Situations

Abstract
Purpose: This study examined the health status in the elderly according to living situations.

Method: The subjects consisted of 122 elderly classifying two groups(Institution and community dweller). Data were collected from January, 2003 to Feb, 2003. Nutritional status, BMI, IADL for physical health status, depression and loneliness for psychological health status, and social engagement for social health status were measured.

Result: The Institution dweller group showed higher nutritional risk and limited IADL than community dwellers. Depression, loneliness and social engagement score were higher in community dwellers than Institution dwellers. Nutritional status showed a significantly negative correlation to depression, loneliness and social engagement. IADL indicated a significantly positive correlation to depression, loneliness and social engagement. Depression showed a significantly positive correlation to loneliness and social engagement. Loneliness indicated a significantly positive correlation to social engagement.

Conclusion: It is necessary to approach individually according to their living situation. Especially, more concern and interventions are necessary for physical health of the institution dwellers and for psychological health status of the community dwellers.
